Three Brooms - $16.00

Three Brooms Overall Rating: Value:

This single vineyard, certified sustainable sav blanc shows lovely white flower, chili pepper, and gooseberry on the nose with some sandy mineralogy. Very nice weight and balance showing passion fruit, ripe apple flavors. Such a pleasant surprise is the roundness, the acid is lively and energetic but not abrasive.

TASTING Our single vineyard wine is genuinely aromatic, with focused minerality, balanced by fruit ripeness, intensity and great breadth and texture. Add a delicacy and elegance born of the locality, and the result is a wine full of complexity. A true representative of its vineyard location in Blind River in the Awatere Valley.

THE VINEYARDS Expectations of a crazy early season were fuelled by the earliest flowering for five years, but 2014’s heavier yields delaying ripening. Our total focus on managing yields to maintain quality led to us dropping the equivalent of over 100T of fruit. As a result our fruit ripened and was harvested earlier than most, well before the rain that caused so much grief. The grapes receive the kind of personal vine care you can only get when the winemaker and viticulturist live on the vineyard.

WINEMAKER’S NOTES 2014 was a very slow fermentation, even by our standards. Extended lees contact, along with French yeast and our version of the old-world practice of battonage lead to enhanced aromatics and added complexity. 2014 is a little finer, more floral, with a nutty character, and typical Blind River slightly smoky minerality.

FOOD PAIRINGRich enough to match with white meats, tuna or swordfish but equally at home with white fish and seafood.

SUSTAINABILITY Our wines are certified under the Sustainable Wine Growing program (SWNZ) which means that vineyard, winemaking and bottling are certified sustainable. But we try to do more. Our microclimate reduces the incidence of disease. Continuous care and careful soil management help us reduce treatments further. Our mantra of Minimal Intervention drives us to keep our vines healthy and productive with minimal impact on our environment.

  • Armas de Guerra Rose

    #1 Armas de Guerra Rose

My heavens! 50+ year old, organic Mencia vines from some of the highest vineyards in Bierzo. Subtle aromas of strawberry, pink grapefruit and white pepper play with clean river rock minerality touched by zesty key lime. Balance and finish are tied together with a vibrating acidity. Structured and executed like a world class ballerina doing flamenco. Sells out every year for good reason. Lighter than Provence, a different planet than White Zin. The only hard part is only opening one bottle at a time.

    #2 Lavender Row Pinot Noir

While French Burgundy may be the highest echelon of this grape, the warm and rugged south of France has a climate similar to CA and can make easy drinking affordable Pinots too. This affordable French beauty offers notes of toasted oak, rhubarb, strawberry, red flowers and crushed stone. But the nose! It truly explodes with the lavender that is grown all around the vines.
